1. Soundbite (English) Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson President, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
So the idea of the colloquy is to give voice to very important people and have them interact with each other and to share that with our larger community and even people from the larger community in the area. Our motto is, Why not change the world? We pose it as a question. It's because we challenge our students to do that. And so this is what I would say. I've certainly changed the world of Rensselaer, of RPI. But in the end, the president is an enabler. And what does that mean? I'm here to enable the education of these brilliant young people to enable the scholarship and research of our faculty. And that is how we change the world.
2. Soundbite (English) Dr. Francis S. Collins, Acting Science Advisor to President Joe Biden
We do precious little deep reflection on the main issues of our society these days. Everybody tends to be a little bit off in their own bubble or an echo chamber, and a lot of it is just restating things that have been stated many times. Instead of standing back and saying, Who are we and where do we want to be? And are we actually making the right decisions for ourselves, our families, our communities, our nation, our world? Are we all caught up in some other kind of distraction? So this ought to be an opportunity to really think about what matter is what are those values that we all still agree on and how do we figure out how to take that forward in a way that makes this a better place?
3. Soundbite (English) Dr. Richard N. Haass, President of the Council on Foreign
RPI or to be more formal - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is a school that is renowned nationally and internationally for the grounding it gives to young people in science. And what we've learned in the last few years is the power of science to change the world. Think of how different the COVID experience would have been. The pandemic experience would have been without two enormous contributions from science. One is Zoom, technology and the whole Internet. Secondly, the MRNA vaccines. So again, it shows the ability of science to make an enormous difference in both of these cases for the positive.
