BEYOND TYPE RUN TEAM OF RUNNERS WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES MEETS FOR 2022 TCS NEW YORK CITY MARATHON PRACTICE RUN

On November 6, nearly 50 individuals living with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) will be running the 2022 TCS New York City Marathon as part of global diabetes nonprofit Beyond Type 1’s Beyond Type Run Team, presented by Dexcom and Tandem Diabetes Care. Together they aim to raise awareness and funds for T1D and showcase how the runners are living beyond their diagnoses.

Ahead of the marathon, on November 2, several members of the Beyond Type Run Team met in Central Park by Bethesda Fountain for one of their final training sessions. During the meetup, they ran two miles, shared final race day tips, discussed the gear they use to manage their diabetes and supported each other before they lace up their sneakers for the 26.2-mile run.

The practice run was led by Beyond Type Run Team Captain Kyle Banks, who is known for his tour with the Broadway cast of The Lion King. Team members Annie Cooper, Bridget Kelly, Dana Grey and Erika Szumel joined Banks for the training run.

Dexcom and Tandem Diabetes Care are presenting sponsors of the team and provide the revolutionary diabetes technologies that work in collaboration with one another to help the runners manage their health. The marathon runners who are using a t:slim X2 insulin pump with Control-IQ Technology by Tandem Diabetes Care and a Dexcom G6 Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) System better manage their diabetes, increase time in their target glucose ranges and automatically adjust their insulin levels based on their CGM’s glucose readings.

Note: Runner Annie Cooper is an employee of Tandem Diabetes Care. Erika Szumel receives complementary insulin pump and supplies from Tandem Diabetes Care for her participation with Beyond Type Run.

RX ONLY. The t:slim X2 insulin pump with Control-IQ technology is indicated for patients with type 1 diabetes, 6 years and older. BOXED WARNING: Control-IQ technology should not be used by people under age 6, or who use less than 10 units of insulin/day, or who weigh less than 55 lbs. “My work on Broadway prepared me in many ways, just the level of activity that is required when performing in a show like Lion King. Being a part of the Beyond Type run team means a lot. Just being in community with my fellow humans, living with Type-one diabetes and taking on a challenge like this is really meaningful. We get to support each other to the finish line, and I'm looking forward to that.”

“So the New York City Marathon has been on my bucket list for quite a while. I did meet someone from Beyond Type One at one of their community events over the summer and found out that they had an extra spot on the team, so it just felt right for this year.”

“The tandem T slim x to pump has really helped me control my blood sugars and keep them in the best range possible. It's kind of amazing how it can automatically adjust when it sees I'm going up towards a certain number or down towards a certain number, which takes a lot of the stress on the every day, like constant thought out of managing type one.”

6. Soundbite (English) Dana Grey, Beyond Type Run team member

“I would say that I've learned almost everything about type one diabetes through training for four marathons. I was so recently diagnosed when I decided I want to take on this challenge, and I can easily say that physically, mentally, in a lot of ways, it's saved my life”
