GUINNESS WORLD RECORD - 7 NEW WONDERS OF THE WORLD IN UNDER 7 DAYS

BRITISH ADVENTURER DEFIES RARE CONDITION TO SET NEW GUINNESS WORLD RECORD VISITING NEW 7 WONDERS OF THE WORLD IN UNDER 7 DAYS

A British Adventurer, who doctors thought might end up in a wheelchair due to a rare condition, has set a new Guinness World Record for visiting the new Seven Wonders of the World in less than seven days, using only public transport.

With just a backpack on his shoulders, Jamie McDonald, known as Adventureman, set off on the journey of a lifetime which saw him travel through nine countries in four continents in under a week.

He set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest time to visit the New Seven Wonders of the World – the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, the ancient city of Petra, the Colosseum in Rome, Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer, Machu Picchu in Peru, and, finally, Mexico’s Chichén Itzá.

Jamie’s achievement is all the more remarkable after doctors believed he’d be in a wheelchair for most of his adult life.

Until the age of nine, Jamie was in and out of hospital with a rare spinal condition called syringomyelia, but with the help of doctors and nurses his symptoms began to ease.

Jamie’s logistical challenge was huge. Global technology company Travelport, planned his complex itinerary but under Guinness World Record rules, once he started he was on his own should he miss any of his connections.

He successfully covered 22,856 miles in just six days, 16 hours, and 14 minutes. During the trip, Jamie flew on 13 flights, and rode in 16 taxis, nine buses, four trains, and one toboggan.

While Machu Picchu proved to be Jamie’s favourite place on the whirlwind tour, Rome provided the opportunity for a quick pizza pitstop – the only non-plane food Jamie ate on the trip!

For the trip to be endorsed by Guinness World Records, Adventureman had to abide by several rules:

·        Use only scheduled public transportation, with licensed taxi rides unable to exceed 50 kilometres

·        Keep a logbook with clearly indexed evidence (receipts, tickets, etc.) supporting each step

·        Obtain receipts and/or tickets everywhere available

·        Use accurate professional equipment (i.e., GPS tracking equipment)

·        Take videos and photos showing the applicant, the location and the date at each site visited

·        Get a written or recorded statement from an official member of staff, local dignitary and/or police officer at each site

·        Understand that the ‘clock’ starts the moment the challenger leaves the first wonder site, and it does not stop for any reason until the challenger sets foot in the final site
