LAUSANNE ANNOUNCED AS THE HOST CITY FOR 2020 WINTER YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES

The Swiss city of Lausanne has been elected to host the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG). Lausanne beat the Romanian City of Brasov in the final vote at the International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s Session in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on the 31st July 2015 (Lausanne 71 votes to Brasov’s 10)

The Winter Youth Olympic Games is an elite multi-sport international event for the world’s best young athletes between the ages of 15-18 who will compete in 70 medal events. Integrated into the event is a unique programme of cultural and educational activities (Learn and Share) that gives the young athletes the necessary skills to inspire and empower them in their future careers both on and off the field of play.

The National Olympic Committees of each city made the submissions of candidature back in November 2013. After a meeting of the IOC Executive Board on 6 December 2014, Lausanne and Brasov were shortlisted.

Population of Lausanne: 133,000
Sport Disciplines: Ice Hockey, Figure Skating, Short Track, Curling, Speed Skating, Alpine Skiing, Freestyle, Snowboard, Cross Country Skiing, Biathlon/ Nordic Combined, Ski Jumping/Nordic Combined (Luge and bobsleigh/skeleton TBC).
Venues: Institute of Sciences of Sport Lausanne University & Swiss Tech Convention Centre. Lausanne 2020’s project makes good use of existing, temporary and demountable venues.
Doping Control: Anti-doping Switzerland, on behalf of Swiss Olympic and Swiss Federal Office of Sports, Lausanne 2020 would make use of the WADA-accredited laboratory in Lausanne.
Youth Olympic Village: Lausanne University Campus, 700 units and 2,569 beds.

This will be the third Winter Youth Olympic Games (Innsbruck 2012 and Lillehammer 2016)

SUJET :
La ville de Lausanne a été élue ville hôte des Jeux Olympiques de la Jeunesse (JOJ) d'hiver de 2020. Lausanne l'emporte sur Brasov, Roumanie, lors du vote final de la Session du Comité International Olympique (CIO) réunie à Kuala Lumpur, Malaisie, le 31 juillet 2015. 

Les Jeux Olympiques de la Jeunesse d'hiver sont une manifestation internationale multisportive destinée aux meilleurs jeunes athlètes du monde entier, âgés de 15 à 18 ans, lesquels concourent dans 70 épreuves. Dans le cadre de cette manifestation, un programme unique associant des activités culturelles à des activités pédagogiques (programme "apprendre et partager") est proposé aux jeunes athlètes afin que ces derniers puissent acquérir les compétences nécessaires pour réussir leur carrière future aussi bien sur l'aire de compétition qu'en dehors.

Pour rappel, les Comités Nationaux Olympiques de chaque ville avaient déposé les candidatures correspondantes en novembre 2013. À l'issue d'une réunion de la commission exécutive le 6 décembre 2014, Lausanne et Brasov avaient été retenues.

The IOC is making available to broadcasters and other bona fide media organisations a video news release of the winning city to organize the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games to be held in Lausanne (Switzerland), after the Announcement Ceremony of the elected city on 31 July 2015, at the 128th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) (hereinafter the “VNR”).

The VNR can be broadcast in whole or in part for news purposes in regularly scheduled news programmes, for a maximum of 30 days after the meetings/events. After such term, the VNR or excerpts thereof shall only be used with the IOC’s prior approval, unless for news reporting or educational purposes.

The VNR will also be available on the IOC’s Olympic YouTube Channel, with the possibility to be embedded on broadcasters and other bona fide media organisations websites and platforms.
