POW! WOW! LONG BEACH FEATURES LARGE-SCALE MURAL INSTALLATIONS BY INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED ARTISTS

Twenty-nine international street artists and muralists convene in Long Beach, CA for POW! WOW! Long Beach 2016, a street art festival designed to boost the city’s creative capital, and inspire cultural storytelling. Originally conceived in Honolulu, HI, POW! WOW! Long Beach brings the diverse perspectives of talented artists to Southern California inviting them to taking over bare walls, theater spaces, and icons such as the Aquarium of the Pacific, and the Long Beach Convention Center during a one week period which began on July 11th. Culminating on Sunday, July 17th, POW! WOW! Long Beach welcomes the public to partake in the festivities this weekend as artists finalize their large-format works of art. One of the most anticipated works comes from artist Sean Yoro whose water murals painted while standing on paddleboards and completed on surfaces ranging from icebergs to rusting shipwrecked vessels have gained him international acclaim. Yoro is currently completing his largest work to-date for POW! WOW! Long Beach and can be seen under the Queensway Bridge.

From July 11 to 17, POW! WOW! Long Beach returns to Long Beach, California, with a week-long celebration of culture, music and art, changing the face of the city with large-scale mural installations.  Inspired by Honolulu’s POW! WOW! Hawaii and following on last year’s successful inaugural event in Long Beach, the festival centers around internationally renowned artists who will complete a series of urban murals throughout the city.

Long Beach, returning for its second year, both celebrates and enhances our city’s authentic character. We can’t wait to see the colorful installations we’ll get to enjoy all year, and we’re excited to welcome so many renowned artists to our neighborhoods.”

Events throughout the week include artist talks at the Art Theatre of Long Beach with Luthuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic and New York City-based photographer Martha Cooper on Tuesday, July 12, and with New York-based, Hawaii native Sean “Hula” Yoro on Wednesday, July 13.  On Friday, July 15, the Long Beach Museum of Art debuts its latest exhibition Vitality & Verve: In The Third Dimension.  For more details on events, visit www.powwowlongbeach.com/schedule.

Centered around a week-long event in Hawaii, POW! WOW! Has grown into a global network of artists and organizes gallery shows, lecture series, schools for art and music, creative community spaces, concerts, and live art installations across the globe.  The inaugural POW! WOW! Long Beach took place in 2015.
